Slalom skating is a skill-demanding and highly technical type of roller skating in which tricks are played out around cones that are evenly spaced and arranged into a straight line, with the use of freestyle skates. Usually, this is done in sports and game competitions and the most popular spacing used in these competitions is 80 centimeters, but in bigger urban competitions the spacing that is used is spaced between 50 and 120 centimeters. The interest rate shown in this sport over the years has increased massively in the figure. The majority of freestyle slalom competitors use inline skates, though some use quad skates.

Guidelines for a Safe and Fun Slalom Skating

Slalom freestyle skating is, no doubt, one of the most challenging skating types that is difficult to learn. The expertise and high level of skill that it requires make it scary for some people, while for others, this makes it even more interesting and an adventure to look forward to. Whichever way, whether you are an expert in slalom skating already, a beginner, or you just have an interest and have not taken any step particularly, this is a list of guidelines that will help you understand the sport and guarantee your safety if you follow them carefully.

  • This may not sound like what you want to hear, but the truth remains that you are going to crash. Be ready to tumble, especially if you are a beginner. But even as an experienced skater, if you intend to start slaloming, be ready to reapply your knee and elbow pads as you may just turn over your slalom skating cones more than you expect.
  • Remove the heel brake of your freestyle skates if you have not done that already. This will undoubtedly obstruct some of the tricky maneuvers that you can explore to enjoy your slalom skating experience.
  • Slaloming can be done in any type of skate that you choose to try with, but using slalom inline skates will make the sport much easier and safer for you. The best skates are those with a short wheel base of about 80mm and a hard boot.
  • When you first start, don't try to learn or try out too many new tricks all at once. Take your time and make sure that all of your basic moves that are necessary for a good foundation in slalom skating are solid. Focus on wheel mastery and maneuvering. Styles like forward cross, backward cross, backward snake, snake and 1 foot are all necessary tricks for basic standards.
  • A great piece of advice you should take note of is to record yourself regularly. This will assist you in identifying any errors and measuring your level of progress. Also, to notice things you were previously unaware of, such as flapping arms. It's a good idea to look back on yourself after some months to see if you've made any progress, even if you may not have noticed immediately.
  • The use of chalk to mark out a trick is an excellent visual cue. It may look funny, but marking out the curves and twists you want to achieve between the cones during your slalom skating sessions helps keep you safe from unnecessary falls and also speeds up your mastery of the sport. Purchase two different colors of chalk, one for each foot, map out the moves you intend to make on each foot and carefully skate through them.
  • Try as much as you can to skate with people who are better at skating than you are. People are usually willing to share their own experiences in the sport and the truth is, you also need the knowledge of others to have a freeride. but also their company. Even a simple observation of a step from them can teach you a lot or simply motivated you to be moved and practice more.
